Green Practices at St. Joseph’s Training College, Pavaratty

St. Joseph’s Training College, Pavaratty, is deeply committed to promoting sustainability and environmental consciousness through a series of impactful green practices that align with UGC Norms. Our campus adopts a holistic and responsible approach to conserving natural resources, reducing our ecological footprint, and fostering a culture of environmental stewardship among students and staff.

1. Encouraging Eco-friendly Transportation

We actively promote the use of bicycles and electric vehicles (E-vehicles) by providing dedicated parking spots and four 20 Amp power plugs for EV charging, available free of cost to all students and staff. This initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions and encourage clean mobility options within the campus.

2. Pedestrian-friendly Campus Design

The college has developed pedestrian-friendly roads and walkways within the campus to ensure safety, encourage walking, and minimize vehicular pollution. This also promotes a healthy lifestyle and reduces the dependence on motorized vehicles.

3. Plastic-free Campus

We have instituted a strict ban on Styrofoam and single-use plastic items such as disposable plates and glasses. All students are encouraged to use reusable stainless steel or polystyrene lunch boxes and steel water bottles, effectively reducing plastic waste generation on campus.

4. Paperless Office through E-Solution

In our effort to move towards a paperless office, we have implemented a dedicated digital platform called “E-Solution”. This software streamlines administrative and academic documentation, significantly reducing the use of paper and promoting efficiency through digitization.

5. Green Landscaping and Student-led Planting

Our campus is adorned with lush green landscaping supported by an ongoing tradition of student-planted greenery, both indoors and outdoors. This hands-on involvement not only enhances the campus environment but also fosters a sense of responsibility toward nature among teacher trainees. The greenery helps support biodiversity, reduces heat accumulation, and improves air quality.

Additionally, the college’s green mission is supported by:

  • Two biogas plants processing toilet and kitchen waste to generate clean energy for nearby institutions.
  • Color-coded bins for source segregation of bio-waste, metal-plastic waste, glass & paper, and e-waste.
  • Bio-bins for composting food waste into organic fertilizer.
  • Sanitary napkin incinerator for hygienic and eco-friendly waste disposal.
  • Digital display boards to promote green protocols.
  • Collaboration with Haritha Karma Sena and Earth Links (Nature Club) for effective waste management and recycling.

Through these integrated efforts, St. Joseph’s Training College upholds its responsibility to nurture a sustainable campus ecosystem and prepare future educators who value and promote environmental ethics.
